The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic Diary looks back at key Celtic events and matches on this day starting on 22nd November 1902…
SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER 1902 – “A more miserable day to stand around a football field could scarce be imagined” says The Scottish Referee, but those who were at Parkhead saw a fair game with Celtic beating Port Glasgow Athletic 3-0 with goals from Willie Loney, Davie Hamilton and the young, diminutive figure of James McMenemy, playing only his second game for the club.
SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER 1913 – Celtic continue their unbeaten run in which they have not even lost a goal, let alone a game, since 7 October with a 1-0 win over Hamilton Athletic with the only goal of the game scored by Patsy Gallacher. It was a hard fought win with both defences on top. McMenemy was missing for Celtic.
SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER 1930 – The steadily improving Celtic side travel to Somerset Park, Ayr and beat the home side 6-2 with a hat-trick from Jimmy McGrory, two from Charlie Napier and one from Peter Scarff. The weather conditions are atrocious with sleet and snow showers, and the attendance is described as “sparse”.
SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER 1941 – No-one could claim that this was a good Celtic team, but this was at least an entertaining fixture for the 9,000 souls who turned up. It was a 4-4 draw against Hearts with Celtic’s goals coming from Jimmy Delaney (who scored twice) Joe McLaughlin and Frank Murphy. The men of the match were Tommy Walker of Hearts, and Jimmy Delaney of Celtic.
SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER 1975 – It is Sean Fallon’s season in charge as Jock Stein is still out recovering from his injuries in the car accident in early July. Celtic, after some indifferent form, return to winning ways with a 3-2 win over St Johnstone before 20,000 at Celtic Park. The evergreen Bobby Lennox scores twice and Kenny Dalglish once.
