Celtic On This Day – 4th March – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic Diary each morning on The Celtic Star looks back at key Celtic events and matches on this day starting on 4th March 1905…

Jimmy Quinn scored a hat-trick

SATURDAY 4 MARCH 1905 – Celtic complete their League programme with a 6-2 win at Motherwell, the goals coming from a hat-trick by Jimmy Quinn, and one each from Willie Loney, Peter Somers and Alec McNair. Celtic are now guaranteed at least a share in the League title, but Rangers can equal them if they win their three outstanding games. Jimmy Quinn, however picks up a slight knock which prevents him travelling to Wrexham to play in Monday’s International Wales v Scotland. He is much missed as Scotland lose 1-3.

WEDNESDAY 4 MARCH 1964 – It is one of Celtic’s finest days in Europe as they beat Slovan Bratislava 1-0 in Bratislava to qualify for the semi final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Sadly no fans (or very few) are there to see John Hughes score the only goal of the tie, but the news is greeted with great enthusiasm back in Scotland when it is announced on the BBC TV News at 6.00 pm.

WEDNESDAY 4 MARCH 1970 – Bertie Auld who had been rested for a few games comes back to dominate the European Cup quarter-final at a packed Parkhead in which Celtic beat the Italian champions Fiorentina 3-0. Auld scores the first goal, then there is an own goal before Willie Wallace adds a third near the end. The wonder is that the score was not a great deal more.

FRIDAY 4 MARCH 1994 – Celtic are born again to-day as the old Board collapses and Canadian tycoon Fergus McCann takes over. No compassion is possible for the guilty people who came close to ruining this fine old club. The news is greeted with unconfined joy by Celtic supporters everywhere.

SATURDAY 4 MARCH 2006 – The time was when a visit from Aberdeen would be looked upon with apprehension. Not nowadays though, as they are swept aside 3-0 at Parkhead before a 59,657 crowd with goals from Maciej Zurawski, Shaun Maloney and Stilian Petrov.

David was a distinguished Celtic author and historian and writer for The Celtic Star. He lived in Kirkcaldy and followed Celtic all my life, having seen them first at Dundee in March 1958. He was a retired teacher and his other interests were cricket, drama and the poetry of Robert Burns. David Potter passed away on 29 July 2023 after a short illness. He was posthumously awarded a Special Recognition award by Celtic FC at the club's Player of the Year awards in May 2024. David's widow Rosemary accepted the award to huge applause from the Celtic Supporters in the Hydro.
