Celtic On This Day – 4th November – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic Diary continues as he looks back at some of the key matches Celtic played on 4th November starting with the game against Partick Thistle on this day on 1905…

Peter Somers scored twice

SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER 1905 – Jimmy McMenemy is out today, and young Alec McNair is given the job of filling his boots for today’s League game against Partick Thistle at Meadowside. Not only does McNair do this job well, he actually scores the third goal in the 3-0 victory, the other two coming from Peter Somers and an own goal. He is a versatile fellow, is young McNair.

Jean McFarlane scored the goal.

SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER 1922 – Following last week’s disappointing defeat by Rangers, Celtic ring the changes for the visit to Shawfield. One of the changes sees Jean McFarlane play at centre forward, and it is Jean who scores the only goal of the game. It has “made in Fife” written all over it, as Jean picks up a fine through ball from young Alec Thomson and slips the ball under the goalkeeper.

Bobby Carroll scored for Celtic

SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER 1961 – It is a fine game on a firm but playable surface at Dens Park, Dundee but Celtic lose narrowly 1-2, the goal coming from Bobby Carroll. The crowd is a very respectable 24,000. It is clear however that Dundee are a fine team and with players like Ian Ure and Alan Gilzean look as if they might be a good bet for the League championship this year. Celtic have little to reproach themselves for on the field, but the day is somewhat spoiled by the outbreaks of hooliganism in Dundee City Centre that night.

SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER 1967 – It is a terrible night for Celtic in Uruguay as they are defeated 0-1 by Racing Club, Argentina in the World Club Championship. The defeat is bad enough, but the collapse of discipline is even worse with John Hughes, Jimmy Johnstone and the mild-mannered Bobby Lennox sent off. In addition, Bertie Auld is sent off but does not go! Not all the blame is attached to Celtic, however, for the Argentinians are as bad, and the refereeing is woefully weak. Celtic and their reputation will take a long time to recover.

SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER 2006 – A last minute fumble by Craig Gordon in Hearts’ goal gives Celtic three deserved points at Celtic Park before a crowd of 58,971. All the goals came in the last twenty minutes of the game with Hearts going 1-0 up and staying there until the last five minutes when Jiri Jarosik equalises, and then comes that dramatic late winner.
