SATURDAY 5 OCTOBER 1929
Celtic really turn it on today to hammer hapless Falkirk 7-0 at Celtic Park today. The crowd is 10,000 and they see Celtic at their best. Jimmy McGrory scores a hat-trick, Paddy Connolly has two and Alec Thomson and Peter Scarff score the others.
SATURDAY 5 OCTOBER 1946
The form of the team has been absolutely terrible with only one win since the start of the season, but the support stays loyal, and they are there in huge numbers to see an honourable (and even unlucky) 2-2 draw at Douglas Park, Hamilton today. Tommy Kiernan, an honest journeyman rather than a superstar, scores the two goals.
SATURDAY 5 OCTOBER 1963
The paltry 17,000 crowd tells its own story about how awful this season has been, but today there is at least some fight in a 2-2 draw against Jock Stein’s Dunfermline at Celtic Park. Frank Haffey was injured and John Fallon was given a game in goal, and Bobby Murdoch and Frank Brogan scored the goals. But Jock Stein must have looked at the shambles that was Celtic in autumn 1963… and wondered.
WEDNESDAY 5 OCTOBER 1966
Celtic take their first step to Lisbon by beating F.C.Zurich 3-0 (5-0 on aggregate) in Zurich with two goals from Tommy Gemmell and one from Steve Chalmers. The Swiss had been bad losers after the first leg, but tonight they are simply well beaten by a superior side.
SATURDAY 5 OCTOBER 1991
You simply could not make this one up! Tony Cascarino had, frankly, underperformed at Celtic Park, a disappointment after what he had done elsewhere. In particular, he simply could not score a goal. But today against Hearts he was brought on as a substitute, scored a goal (at last) and then was sent off! Neither Tony nor Celtic knew whether to laugh or cry. For the record Celtic won the game 3-1 with Mark McNally and Charlie Nicholas the other scorers.
