Celtic Historian David Potter each morning on The Celtic Star looks back at key Celtic events and matches on this day starting on 6th November 1887. David’s latest book The Celtic Rising ~ 1965 The Year Jock Stein Changed Everything is out now on Celtic Star Books.
SUNDAY 6th NOVEMBER 1887 – At a meeting at St.Mary’s Hall, East Rose Street, Glasgow, a meeting held under the chairmanship of John Glass decides to form a football club for the purpose of providing hot meals for the poor of the East End of Glasgow. Arguments rage about the name of the new club, and “Glasgow Hibernians” has some support, but it is felt that, as the club will be open to all, the name “Celtic” which combines Scotland and Ireland is a better idea.
SATURDAY 6th NOVEMBER 1937 – Jimmy McGrory has now retired from the playing side of the game, but that does not seem to have any effect on Celtic as they thump Partick Thistle 6-0 with two goals from Joe Carruth (McGrory’ s successor in the centre forward position), two from Johnny Crum and one each from Willie Buchan and Chick Geatons.
SATURDAY 6th NOVEMBER 1976 – 69,707 fans at Hampden see justice emphatically NOT done in the Scottish League Cup final as Celtic in spite of going ahead through a Dalglish penalty lose 1-2 after extra time to Aberdeen. In spite of dominating possession, Celtic fail to score and Aberdeen get the goals that matter. The manic celebrations of manager Ally MacLeod are difficult to take, but he will be a different man in Argentina some eighteen months later.
SATURDAY 6th NOVEMBER 2010 – In an astonishing game of football at Celtic Park before 46,446 fans, Celtic beat Aberdeen 9-0. It all goes wrong for the Dons when ex-Celt Paul Hartley is red-carded for handball, and then Celtic simply run riot even though they themselves also have Thomas Rogne sent off. Gary Hooper scores a hat-trick, as does Anthony Stokes (even though two of his are penalties), there is an own goal and the other two are scored by Joe Ledley and Paddy McCourt with yet another penalty. Henrik Larsson, watching from the stands, is much impressed. Celtic fans, never happy, keep shouting “We want ten!” near the end.
