Welcome to a new daily series where The Celtic Star will reminisce on past games On This Day. Dating back to the clubs inception, we will take a look back on some fine moments…
On this day 20 September 1952, Celtic beat theRangers 2-1 in front of a crowd of 48,000 at Celtic Park. Walsh and Rollo (his goal shown above) scored within six minutes of each other to make it 2-0 after 10 minutes. The Glasgow Herald expressed concern at the sparse crowd that day, “was it the decline of the two teams in football skill? Was it the two shilling gate? Or was it that many people are just plain scared to go?”
Nine years ago today, Celtic convincingly hammered Paul Hartley’s Dundee side 6-0. Tom Rogic, Leigh Griffiths, Scott Brown and Nadir Ciftci all got in on the act. Whilst Emilio Izaguirre grabbed a rare brace. Amazingly, the Honduran blazed a penalty over the bar which would have been his first and only ever career hat-trick.
20 September 2017, Celtic stretched their unbeaten domestic run to 56 games as they defeated Dundee 4-0 at Dens Park in the Scottish League Cup quarter-final. James Forrest grabbed a double with Scott Sinclair scoring from the spot and current captain Callum McGregor scoring the games third. Some brilliant photos from that game are shown above.
On this day 20 September 1969, Celtic won at Ibrox 1-0 through a moment of magic by Harry Hood. It was Jock Stein’s first win at Ibrox as Celtic manager and the Hoops first win away from home against their Glasgow rivals for 12 years. They done this with an injury list consisting of Murdoch, Auld, Hughes, Connelly and Callaghan.
27 years ago today Celtic defeated Aberdeen 2-0 at Parkhead. Henrik Larsson celebrated his birthday by scoring a double, his second being an outstanding free-kick past Jim Leighton in the Dons goal.
On this day 20 September 2018, Celtic played Norwegian side for the third time in two months and the fifth time in two seasons. The Hoops went onto win the game 1-0 thanks to a last gasp header by Leigh Griffiths.
