Celtic on this Day – John Thomson is born, Artur Boruc’s Hampden heroics

Celtic on this Day – John Thomson is born on 28 January 1909, another great Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc has an incredible evening at Hampden in a League Cup semi-final penalty shoot-out against Dundee United…

Celtic 0-0 Dundee United, the Hoops remarkably win 11-10 on penalties. Scoring 10 of their 11 penalties, goalkeeper Artur Boruc’s spot-kick was the pick of the bunch. Both sides could not be separated across 120 minutes of football, partly down to the atrocious pitch at Hampden. Willo Flood who would crucially miss Dundee United’s penalty would sign for Celtic two days later.

Celtic 2-0 St Mirren. It took 68 minutes to finally break down St Mirren’s outstanding goalkeeper Campbell Money with this Scottish Cup 3rd round victory over the Buddies being more laboured than the scoreline suggests. Willie Falconer grabbed the games opener, and Pierre Van Hooijdonk made it two moments later.

Celtic v Dumbarton, press cutting from the Scottish Cup match on 28 January 1989 at Celtic Park.

Celtic 2-0 Dumbarton. With 10 minutes to play, it looked as though Dumbarton’s defensive tactics would force a draw, and a Scottish Cup third round replay but 16 corners later, Celtic managed to find the back of the net courtesy of Andy Walker. Tommy Burns put the tie beyond any doubt six minutes later despite being suspiciously offside.

Stranraer 1-4 Celtic. Martin O’Neill’s side erased dreadful memories of last year’s early departure to lower division opposition in the Scottish Cup with a convincing display at Stair Park. Belgian defender Joos Valgaeren put Celtic ahead, and goals from Jackie McNamara and Lubo Moravcik as well as an unfortunate own goal from veteran Stranraer defender Keith Knox booked Celtic’s place in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.

Whitehill Welfare 0-3 Celtic. This Scottish Cup third round tie was played at Easter Road in order to house more supporters. Whitehill Welfare had been unbeaten in the East of Scotland league for months until they were defeated by Civil Service Strollers a week before their encounter with Celtic. Whitehill attacker, Ross Middlemist found himself in direct competition with Jackie McNamara, who was a former schoolboy teammate. Middlemist cancelled a trip to Australia in order to play the game and cross swords with Jackie. Celtic were given a fairly uncomfortable afternoon and had to work for their victory with two late goals adding gloss onto the scoreline. Full credit to Scott Cantlay, the amateur goalkeeper who repelled the Hoops across the 90 minutes.

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter each morning on The Celtic Star looked back at key Celtic events and matches on this day starting on 28th January 1911…

John Hastie scored

SATURDAY 28 JANUARY 1911 – Celtic’s League challenge has been faltering for a while, and it may be that there will be no 7 League titles in a row in 1911, but the Scottish Cup campaign is off to a good start with a 2-0 win over St Mirren and Celtic Park, the goals coming from Jimmy McMenemy and John Hastie.

Jean McFarlane scored twice

SATURDAY 28 JANUARY 1922 – Montrose are welcome visitors to Celtic Park for this Scottish Cup tie. Jean McFarlane scores twice, Adam McLean once and Tommy McInally, apparently the target of several English clubs, scores the other in a 4-0 defeat of Angus men who are overwhelmed by the occasion.

SATURDAY 28 JANUARY 1967 – Bobby Murdoch, Tommy Gemmell, Steve Chalmers and Bertie Auld score the goals that put Arbroath out of the Scottish Cup before 31,000 people at Parkhead, but that is not the main topic of conversation that day, for, because Berwick Rangers have no floodlights, their game has kicked off half an hour earlier and news reaches Parkhead that Berwick Rangers have beaten Glasgow Rangers 1-0. It is not believed for some time.

Brian McClair scored twice

SATURDAY 28 JANUARY 1984 – Some 17 years to the day since that famous result at Shielfield Park, Berwick, the other big Glasgow club arrive for a Scottish Cup game, but this time, rather to the disappointment of the media, there is no surprise result and Celtic win 4-0 with two goals from Brian McClair, one from Frank McGarvey and one from Jim Melrose.
