Celtic on This Day – Paradise a Building Site as Hearts are thrashed

HEARTS were the visitors to Celtic Park on this day in 1996. The new stadium was very much a work in progress as Celtic piled on the agony to the Jam Tarts, with four goals from Goals from Paul McStay, Pierre Van Hooijdonk, Brian McLaughlin and Simon Donnelly.

Captain McStay scored an absolute screamer in the opening few minutes and shortly afterwards McLaughlin and Andy Thom combined to set up Tosh McKinley to cross for Van Hooijdonk to double Celtic’s lead.

McLaughlin produced a Jinky Johnstone moment and a lovely finish to make it three and that’s how it stayed until the interval. Simon Donnelly scored a neat fourth in the second half for this free flowing side managed by Tommy Burns.
