Celtic right-back target ‘aspires to move to Europe’

Anthony Ralston’s inspired form as of late should not cloud the fact that Celtic really do need a new, blockbuster right-back.

First it was Brandon Soppy, then it was Aurelio Buta who were linked with Ange Postecoglou’s men to fill the shirt Jeremie Frimpong last occupied. But, with Soppy  seemingly disappearing off the face of the earth, and with Buta reportedly on his way to Rafa Benitez’s Everton side, there is still a gaping hole in the wings of Celtic’s defence.

Argentine right-back Fabricio Bustos was linked as recently as last Friday; and, with the 25-year-old heading into the last year of his contract, it appears he could be available on the cheap.

Bustos has played for El Rojo since he was just 12 years old, making 101 league appearances since his debut aged 20 in 2016. He has kept his place in the side ever since, attracting the attention of European teams and even the Argentina national team, for whom he has appeared twice.

Despite Celtic’s interest, they also reportedly face competition from River Plate – their city rivals and Argentina’s most successful side.

However, speaking to ESPN, Bustos showed admiration for River – but didn’t rule out a move to Europe.

Obviously you want to compete and right I think that River is competing very well. Of course it all depends on the offer they can send to Independiente, if it happens at all. If not not, we will aspire to Europe or whatever comes later.

At this point, I think Celtic fans will take any defensive squad depth they can. With less than desirable left-backs in Taylor and Bolingoli, defensive reinforcements are needed rapidly if Ange is to nudge ahead in the race for the Premier League title.

  1. The boy Doig at Hibs is a better option. Double with Nesbitt for 7 million. Hibs would take that. Or waste time and money as well as future profits on a punt from abroad. The two Hibees could be worth a lot in a few years. Are we going to make another McGinn mistake?
