Celtic set for contract talks with striker, according to report

Celtic look set to initiate contract talks with Charlie Wyke, according to Football Insider. The 28-year-old is being chased by a number of teams but Celtic are said to in pole position to sign the player as Ange Postecoglou plots a summer rebuild at the club. The club are hoping to offer the player a deal this week and Wyke is said to be keen on a deal.

The Sunderland striker is a free agent with the Black Cats having been hoping to offer him a new deal to keep him at the Stadium of Light but interest out with League 1 appears to have captured the player’s imagination. With 31-goals last season and being available on a bosman, Wyke may certainly be worth a punt but only if the manager believes that he can play in his system. There is no point signing players because they look good on paper only to find that they don’t work with the manager’s ideas.

Furthermore, Football Insider are often to be taken with a pinch of salt, even if they do sometimes get it right. Wyke certainly falls into the category of players Celtic should be looking at – talented and prolific.

Wyke would certainly offer something different in attack and as he is available on a free could be worth a punt. Celtic’s recruitment this summer needs to be impeccable. It needs to address key shortfalls in the squad and bring the standard up across the playing staff.
Wyke may not be the answer but it looks as if Celtic are still conducting business behind the scenes even if there is no Director of Football in place.
