Celtic snap up ex-Western Sydney Wanderers defender Liam Bonetig

Celtic have today announced that they have completed the signing of former Sydney Wanderers defender, Liam Bonetig on a three year deal. The 18-year-old will initially join up with Celtic’s B-Team and will have the chance to work with Stephen McManus and Darren O’Dea moving forward as he looks to develop his potential at the Scottish Premiership Champions.

Bonetig comes highly recommended from his homeland just like another of Celtic’s summer recruits, Marco Tilio. The centre-back was a product of the Wanderers’ youth set-up and has been praised for his performances during the Australian Schoolboys’ tour of the UK and Ireland of late.

The player also managed to grab himself the Player of the Tour award in the aftermath of that one, following a strong showing and a consistent level of performance for his country during that adventure on this side of the world. Bonetig will now get the opportunity to play in the UEFA Youth League and showcase his skills in the Lowland League too.

Speaking on his switch to the Bhoys, he said to the official Celtic FC website: “It’s an amazing feeling to have signed. It’s such a huge club and I couldn’t believe it when Celtic were interested. So I am just glad to get it done. I couldn’t really describe what it felt like when I first heard of Celtic’s interest. It’s some feeling. The boys told me it’s a great time to come to the club with some big games coming up.

“So playing and travelling to those is going to be some experience. Since I have been here, the coaches and players have been great to me. They have been really welcoming and made my time very easy at the moment. Now, I am just really excited to get going.”

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
