Celtic – The form team in Europe

Form team in Europe!…

Celtic can look to exemplary recent form for confidence ahead of a hoped-for extended run in the Europa Conference League, starting with tomorrow night’s last 16 first leg play-off clash with Bodo/Glimt at Celtic Park.

UEFA have released a form table for all the remaining sides in the Europa Conference League and the Hoops come out top as the only side with a 100% record in their last five matches, ahead of Marseille, Feyenoord, AZ Alkmaar, Sparta Prague and FC Copenhagen.

The Hoops are looking to win a first post-Christmas knockout European tie for the first time since 2004, when Alan Thompson’s famous volley at Celtic Park, followed by a clean-sheet in the Nou Camp saw Celtic defeat Barcelona over two legs.

It’s been a long wait for Celtic supporters to get that monkey off the back, and although the current group of players have played little part in such a record, it would be another impressive achievement if Ange Postecoglou could take Celtic to the last eight of a major European tournament, and another indication of the huge strides Celtic are making under the coaching of Ange.

And if the Hoops are looking for further statistical evidence to back up their claim as one of the form teams in Europe, then they can look no further than another form table, this one produced by The Analyst.com that shows Celtic as second only to Porto and ahead of Manchester City, PSG and Juventus when it comes to unbeaten runs in the top 10 ranked leagues by UEFA…

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic revolution is starting to kick-on now, but you can be sure the manager didn’t come to Scotland for domestic dominance alone. As such the manager, as much as the supporters, will be keen to use the platform of the Europa Conference League as an opportunity to showcase the astonishing improvements made during Postecoglou’s rebuild on the European stage.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
