Celtic unlikely to land £6.5m rated target after Premier League admission

We all know that lots of players will see Celtic as a stepping stone to the English Premier League, but it looks like Ivan Toney is looking to go straight there.

The Peterborough striker is clearly too good for League One, and a recent report from Glasgow Live even indicated that a move to Celtic was his preferred option.

There’s been a lot of speculation about his future and it’s fair to say that a move to a good Championship club might be the most realistic thing for him if he doesn’t move to Celtic, but a report from Peterborough Today has suggested he has bigger things in mind.

They confirm that a fee was agreed with Brentford and that could actually be the perfect move for him, but they go on to say that the player says he wants to move to the Premier League and it looks like he’s holding out for that.

The report also suggests that The Posh are hoping to earn around £6.5m from his sale, even though he’s going into the final year of his contract.

We’ve seen in recent years that the jump from the Championship to the top flight is too much for most players to handle, so Toney could be taking a big gamble, especially when you consider that he’s never done anything of note at a level higher than League One so far.

From Celtic’s point of view it’s hard to see them signing Toney when they have Ajeti and Edouard on the books anyway, but it will be interesting to follow Toney next season to see if he made the right choice.
