Celtic v Glasgow City: “We are stronger than we were before lockdown. Now it’s time to show it on the pitch,” Fran Alonso

“It’s great whenever a game is shown on TV, but at the same time with it being a home game I’d rather have our fans here,” the Celtic FC Women manager said. “They will be missed as we really felt them when we beat City, so I think that’s a huge plus that we’ve lost. However, it’s still great that the fans can watch it on TV, and I hope they enjoy the game.”

Today’s game is the first match since 13 December after short winter break was followed by a much longer Government enforced lockdown due to the paramedic situation and including today’s top of the table clash with Glasgow City, the Celts have 14 fixtures to fit in between now and 6 June.

And in another development for the women’s game Sportscene are starting from this evening a weekly show covering all the matches in the SWPL on the BBC Scotland channel. This is brilliant news for those of us who have been supporting Fran’s exciting team over the past few seasons.

“Obviously, we are looking forward to competing,” Alonso told Celtic FC Women’s official site. “I wish we had had two more weeks of preparation, but I understand why we have had four. We need to complete 14 fixtures before June and it’s a very tight calendar, but we’re looking forward to competing again.

“It does feel like a new season. We have been doing a pre-season so the only difference really is that we are starting two points behind, but our goal is to try and win every single game. We aren’t thinking about the league table at the moment.

“We obviously have four new players, three who have gone and Sarah Teegarden coming back, it does feel like a brand-new season. With so many new players coming its still early days and we are far from the end product, but it has been very positive,” Fran added.

Celtic v Glasgow City is live on BBC Alba this afternoon, kick-off is at 4.10pm.
