Celtic v RB Leipzig: ‘We can get a positive result on Thursday,’ Celtic star

CELTIC scored from a corner yesterday, remarkably. Dear knows how many corners we have had over the past few seasons that have delivered nothing. We actually scored from a counter from a Livingston corner on the opening day of the season but that doesn’t count. And of course we have lost quite a few goals ourselves from corners – the last minute winner for Kilmarnock at Rugby Park springs to mind.

So now that we have broken the corner jinx we should be quite pleased with ourselves should we not? Congratulations to Callum McGregor for the delivery and Filip Benkovic for the fine header into the Hearts goal.

The 21 year old central defender is certainly enjoying his loan spell at Celtic and was delighted after the game yesterday having scored his first goal for the club. He is also building up a decent understanding with Dedryck Boyata – who Brendan Rodgers suggested may have a longer term future at Celtic than we all thought. That’s a story for another day though.

“I’m very happy with my goal. First of all, I want to put the team first. We attack together and defend together and this is the only way we’re able to achieve these things,” Filip said at the post match press conference. “We did an amazing job because this was a big win for us. I’m really happy with the result and I’m looking forward to the next game.

“When you play in this team, you feel proud. There are very big players in this team and I can learn a lot from them because they have a lot of experience. Everything is very positive right now.”

Benkovic has certainly won himself many admirers among the Celtic support. The boy looks a class act.

“It’s always good to have a clean sheet, but the most important thing is the team spirit. Without it, there is no clean sheet.

“We have a few games behind us and we talk to each other in training and during the game. This is important because when you speak to each other it helps to improve.

“We must speak more and concentrate even more in the European game on Thursday. If we can do that, then we can get a positive result.”
