Celtic v Spartans: Rare bout of common sense as Celtic brings forward Sunday’s kick-off time

Fran Alonso and his Celtic FC Women side have made a bright start to the SWPL campaign, with eleven goals scored and none conceded, as the Hoops defeated Hibs 9-0 on the opening day of the season before following up with a 2-0 away win over Partick Thistle on Sunday.

For those who visited the Excelsior Stadium for the season opener, and those who have purchased season tickets for this campaign, it looked as if a difficult choice may have had to be made this weekend, with Celtic FC Women kicking off at 2pm against Spartans in the SWPL, whilst the men’s team entertained Hearts with a 3pm Kick off.

Thankfully a rare bout of common sense has led to that particular issue being addressed, with Celtic confirming a change in Kick-off time for Celtic FC Women, and allowing fans the chance to see both teams in action this Sunday, with Celtic announcing the change to the kick-off time on the club’s official website.

‘The kick-off for Celtic FC Women’s fixture against Spartans FC this Sunday (21 August) has been brought forward to 12noon to avoid a clash with the first-team match at Celtic Park.

The Celtic FC Women v Spartans FC match will still be played at the Excelsior Stadium, Airdrie.

All tickets bought for the original fixture will still be valid. Supporters who cannot make the re-arranged kick-off will be contacted individually and entitled to a full refund.

Tickets are available to buy online now at £8 for adults and £4 for concessions. After a phenomenal league opener at the Excelsior Stadium, when the Hoops beat Hibernian 9-0, this weekend’s game is not one to miss!’

And they are right, Celtic’s game with Spartans is certainly not one to miss. Fran Alonso’s side have already looked a side more capable of producing the consistency required to mount a league challenge this season, and with the promise of further transfer activity ahead, there may even be a new face or two announced in the coming days to add further to the excitement a sharp start to the SWPL season has brought about.

Sunday’s clash with Spartans will be no easy task, but with Celtic starting the season strongly and looking potent in attack as well as sound at the back, confidence will be high in the camp. There’s a huge opportunity though to get the three points and go to the top of the league looking down on theRangers who have had their own game called off to allow them to prepare for their Women’s Champions League match next week.

So now thanks to a change in kick-off time there will be no need for Celtic supporters to have to choose between watching the women’s and the men’s team. Hopefully such a common-sense approach will catch on as the season progresses.

With the women’s game finishing around 1.45pm there’s plenty of time to get from Airdrie to Celtic Park for the game against Hearts. The Celtic Star will be speaking to Fran Alonso tomorrow at his pre-match media conference and a always that’s bound to be entertaining!

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
