Celtic Wanted To Keep Patryk Klimala, NY Red Bulls Director Claims

Celtic recently sold Patryk Klimala, recouping much of their original £3.5m outlay on the player. The Polish striker didn’t make much of an impact at Paradise, but according to the sporting director of his new club, the Hoops didn’t want to sell him.

Klimala struggled to adapt to Scottish football and only found the net three times in 28 appearances. It was therefore unsurprising that Celtic accepted an offer from New York Red Bulls to take the player to the MLS. However, according to (Red Bulls’ sporting director) Kevin Thelwell, the Celtic hierarchy were reluctant to let the forward leave.

Thelwell told The Athletic: “I had outstanding references on him at Celtic There were some people there who didn’t want to let him go, didn’t feel he had the opportunity perhaps he should have done and were also saying if he did get the opportunity Celtic would have been a lot better for it.

“These are people I trust and people we trust within our network.”

Klimala is now reported to be among the top earners at New York Red Bulls and time will tell whether he will be a decent addition to the MLS.
