Celtic will need to pay £4.2m for Starfelt but what about Vuskovic?

Celtic will need to pay around £4.2m for Carl Starfelt, according to reports. The 26-year-old Swedish Internationalist has three years remaining on his deal with Ruben Kazan but SportExpressen are reporting that Ange Postecoglou’s side will sanction a 50m Krona bid – around £4.2m for the central defender.

The 26-year-old made 33 appearances last season, scoring 3 times and assisting 3 times but he also boasts the highest passing accuracy in the Russian league with an impressive 91.4%. He certainly fits the profile that Celtic are looking for and if a deal can be done, it would mean that Kris Ajer would certainly be headed for the Paradise exit.

Although, with news of Starfelt, we wonder what it means for Celtic’s pursuit of Mario Vuskovic. The 19-year-old Croatian has also been heavily tipped with a £4m move to Celtic but you cannot see Celtic committing £8m towards two central defenders unless they are both automatic starters and the club still have Christopher Jullien.

If Starfelt signs, it may mean that we won’t see Vuskovic due to the budget being needed elsewhere. Although, a slim chance remains that Celtic could surprise us and sign both.

As a support we have been conditioned by years of lack of preparation and proper investment to expect that we will sell a top player and buy a cheaper one whilst seeing the money disappear into the club. However, under Dom McKay there is a hope that there will be real change and if the club go all-out in this market with the carrot of Champions League football both this and next season, it could set the club in a great position for further years of dominance after a blip in 2020/21.
