Celtic youngster hopes to emulate Kieran Tierney’s success at left back

Celtic youngster Adam Montgomery has said that he hopes he can emulate the success of Kieran Tierney, who was also moved to left-back as he progressed through the ranks at Lennoxtown. Tierney is now one of Arsenal’s best and brightest prospects following his £25m move to London in 2019.

Montgomery gave his first interview with Celtic TV as the 18-year-old looks to progress into the first team before the end of the campaign. Highly-rated at Lennoxtown, the player made first appearance in the senior side’s matchday squad as an unused sub in a 1-0 win over Aberdeen.

Montgomery was convinced to switch attack for defence under Darren O’Dea, who convinced the starlet to become a left-back. The player also looks up to left-backs at the club Greg Taylor and Diego Laxalt, but the main source of inspiration appears to be KT.

KIERAN TIERNEY CAME IN AT A YOUNG AGE AS A FULL-BACK, DO YOU LOOK UP TO HIM?

“100 percent. Him being here from a young age, breaking into the team as a full-back and now you look at him doing so well at Arsenal, he’s a player that I’ve really looked up to since I made that move to full-back myself.”

GREG TAYLOR AND DIEGO LAXALT MUST BE PLAYERS YOU LOOK UP TO.
“Those two guys are really helpful and they’ve helped me lots since I’ve come up. Especially Greg, he’s a great guy, he’s helped me a lot with one-to-one stuff, in the gym and out on the pitch. Those two guys are the two main men I’m looking up to.”

“It’s a massive achievement for me and my family and I’m thankful for everyone who has given me that opportunity. But it’s just a start, I’m really looking forward to pushing on and seeing how the rest of this season and beyond can go.”

Adam signed a deal until 2025 earlier this month as John Kennedy looks to integrate him within the first team ahead of the arrival of a new manager.

It is notable that Montgomery has been named on the bench previously after signing a new deal whilst Armstrong Oxo-Flex and Karamoko Dembele are left out as the pair appear ready to depart the club in the summer. It is reassuring to see a young talent sign a deal when the club have been so poor at retaining stars, seeing teams like Bayern Munich and Manchester City luring them away.
