The Chief Football Correspondent for The Athletic David Ornstein was answering questions during his weekly addition of ‘Ask Ornstein’ when Johnston’s name was surprisingly mentioned with the prestigious journalist claiming that two English Premier League sides are eyeing a potential bid for the Canadian international.

“Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston is generating attention from clubs in England”

When questioned on what activity Marco Silva’s Fulham will be looking to complete this summer, Ornstein responded: “Fulham have recruited well in recent times and it’s showing in their performances under Marco Silva.”

“I Know Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston is generating attention from clubs in England, with Fulham among his admirers. The Canada international recently signed a new contract at Parkhead and isn’t known to be unhappy – but there was firm interest in January.”

“It’s not only Fulham but also Ipswich and others who are looking at him”

Ornstein added: “From what I hear, it’s not only Fulham but also Ipswich and others who are looking at him. Johnston was longlisted for the Best FIFA Men’s XI last year, so this is probably no surprise, and I’d expect more suitors to emerge from the Premier League and across Europe in the summer.”

Johnston who has been capped 51 times for Canada and is under contract at Celtic until 2029 will undoubtedly attract interest from clubs in England and across Europe this summer.

The right-back made his 100th appearance for the Scottish champions in Tuesday’s 5-1 victory over Aberdeen at Celtic Park. Winning six major honours with the club since arriving from CF Montreal in January 2022, Johnston is averaging a trophy for the Hoops every 16 matches.

Fulham and Ipswich Town would certainly be able to offer Johnston more cash and bottom half Premier League football but not Champions League football, where Johnston might prefer to sample again before he even considers a move from Celtic.

Yet an inevitable fall-out from Celtic’s excellent showing in the Champions League this season is that there is likely to be more interest that usual in more of our players with Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda already being the subject of speculation. Add Alistair Johnston to that list folks.
