Celtic’s baffling Vata stance as Sampdoria hover

Celtic’s B-team star, Rocco Vata is being tracked by Italian side Sampdoria ahead of a potential move away from the Hoops this summer.

The youngster has been viewed by many as the next best thing to come out of the Bhoys’ academy in years, yet the player has yet to be offered a new contract by Celtic, despite persistent mainstream media and Celtic fan media reports that Vata has stalled on signing a new contract with the club he has played for through all Academy stages since he was seven.

The Celtic Star has repeated stated that this was the situation, with Vata being dropped down alongside the other B-Team from training with the first team this season to settle for football at Lowland League level.

Many amongst the support have been clamouring for Brendan Rodgers to use the starlet due to a dearth in creativity at the minute, only exacerbated still by the injury crisis we’re currently facing in the wide-forward positions. There seems to be no way in for the youngster though as Celtic don’t appear to view the winger as having a future at the club.

There has been significant interest in Vata since it has been reported that he is willing to listen to potential suitors offers, as he looks to forge his way in the professional men’s game. Considerable interest has emerged from Italy before this point too, with Celtic’s Champions League foes Lazio, Verona, Torino – who had a £550,000 bid rejected for him – and now Sampdoria looking at procuring the player from Celtic’s B-team.

Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports has now given an update  on the interest surrounding the Republic of Ireland U21 cap and has intimated that Serie A side Sampdoria have expressed an interest in Rocco. His current deal is up in the summer and he can officially start speaking to other parties about his future next month. It would be a blow for the Hoops who have already lost a clutch of talented young players of late.

The Sky Sports man had previous informed the Celtic support that Vata had refused a new contract with Celtic but last night corrected his earlier error and in doing so getting behind The Celtic Star’s information that turned out to be totally correct. Rocco Vata has NOT been offered a new deal at Celtic.

Callum McGregor and James Forrest both scored today. Both are Celtic Academy graduates and both are entering the veteran stages of their careers. Yang started at the right winger today and was awful in that first half at Perth. A better option than Rocco Vata? Not really.

Here’s that update from Joseph and also his earlier tweet that claimed Rocco Vata was stalling on signing a new deal with Celtic. Last night in his update he corrected this and now we need to find out from Celtic why our best young player is not being offered a new deal.

“UPDATE: Sampdoria have expressed an interest in Celtic forward Rocco Vata. Vata’s current deal expires in the summer & Celtic will be due around £343,000 in compensation if he signs a pre-contract next month. It’s understood, Celtic have made no official contract offer to Vata.”

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.

  1. When will you rocket scientists realize that today’s player contract situation is a two way street? If a player doesn’t want to stick around and thinks the grass is greener elsewhere, let them be disillusioned!
But instead of always jumping aboard that bandwagon of “lets blame the board” just ask yourselves how many of these youngsters who have decided to seek pastures new have actually gone on to better and greater things!
Then you might understand why the BOARD do what THEY do and YOU do what YOU do!
