Celtic’s cunning Plan B – Sign goal-shy striker on loan, save £10m – genius

Earlier today we brought you the news that Celtic face late competition from Ajax in our pursuit of Kasper Dolberg…

Kasper Dolberg of Denmark

The Dane, fresh from banging in 24 goals last season for Anderlecht, suddenly looks like he might fancy a romantic return to Amsterdam rather than a cold Wednesday night in Aberdeen. No accounting for taste and all that.

But fear not! Because according to journalist Mark Hendry’s Substack, we may have a cunning Plan B (or is it Plan L by now?) – a loan move for Strasbourg striker Sekou Mara.

The 23-year-old hasn’t kicked a ball for the French side this season, which is always a reassuring sign of a prolific marksman in the making.

That said, Strasbourg paid over £10 million for him back in 2024. But so far, he’s contributed next to nothing for them. Before that, he was at Southampton. And last season in Ligue 1, he played 27 games and chipped in with three whole goals. Three. Goals.

At least try to contain your excitement.

Mara’s story actually started with more promise at Bordeaux, where he became the youngest player to score a league goal for them in almost 14 years. Burgeoning financial woes – well that’s what we call liquidation in Scotland isn’t it? – meant Bordeaux cashed in, shipping him to the Premier League, but he never established himself. Since then, the lad’s been drifting as much as the career of any former Ibrox manager.

Could Celtic be where he rediscovers his mojo? Maybe it could. Stranger things have happened. But, when you’re staring down the barrel of Ajax nicking Dolberg, and the answer is a shot-shy striker who hasn’t found the net regularly in three year -well, you’ve got to laugh or you’ll cry.

Still, it’s a rumour. And as any Celtic supporter knows, fresh rumours are the lifeblood of transfer window. But on deadline day? Now that’s a bit more worrying especially since we have world class operators handling our transfer business.

Who knows? Maybe Sekou Mara will arrive and grab the winner in a Glasgow Derby, and score a barrowload in the Europa League, then we’ll all swear we always rated him. Don’t lie to yourself. You will.

Still, lets stick to the positives for now. Dolberg has yet to sign for Ajax, it is only a rumour at the moment, and Mark Hendry also told us all there was nothing in the Balikwisha to Celtic rumours and he played for us yesterday.

He’s been right plenty times as well of course, but on this one, do we even want him to be?

Keep the faith, keep the faith. There’s still seven hours to go.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.

    • You could not make this farce up player who should have been bought weeks ago now looking at if true a player worst than adah what the he’ll is going on at celtic” now the winger we bid on is not for sale well done Rodgers and our pathetic board who done there best to give the rangers a leg up to compete for the lesuge and cups a bunch of bent bustards.

  1. Demonstrations and Protests incoming. Shambles isn’t the word for it . Embarrassment of a club.

  2. players see how this club is run and start running themselves. joke board. rogers will be next to run and nobody can blame him

    • Celtic will not win the league Hibs have a better chance than Celtic are not the same team 😦 just for a change it’s the board again we will probably end up getting crappy players again we will end up 3rd in the league shocking

  3. We aint getting him however French Eddy only scored 4 in 20 odd before we got him on loan so never a good thing to judge on that

  4. Are we down to choice no 20 yet, we must be getting close . Teams are asking for millions for average players cant see us getting anybody that will make a difference at this late stage, is there nobody in the b team that are worth giving a shot or doesnt Rogers rate them a Bit like Nawrocki and Lagerbecke.

  5. Not saying he’s going to do well (hopefully not) but we could have signed Miovski months ago. We could have signed anybody months ago.
I don’t know why but in the long line of transfer window frustration over the years, this one is now feeling like the worst. It should have been the easiest. All the time in the world, all the cash to spend, and clear positions to fill. And here we are. Quickly becoming synonymous around Europe with lowball offers and last minute bin raking.
A hopelessly amateur way to run a football club.
The Elite Coach needs to get a tune out of the players he has, and pronto.

  6. Let’ s welome David Datro Fofana from Chelsea into the conversation. Fofana is just coming back from a serious injury so exactly what we need. It’s like someone at Celtic is sitting at home and selecting players on Championship manager based on particular attributes. Our transfer window has been an absolute shambles. If he does sign for us I will be fully behind him but world class we definitely aren’t.

  8. It’s as if every agent in europe has been told don’t deal with Celtic nah that would be laughed at a mean it’s only a flag
