Celtic’s defensive crisis could be solved as summer target available for less than his £10.8m release clause

Celtic’s defensive options do actually look pretty solid on paper, but then you could say that about the entire team.

Clearly something isn’t right in terms of the tactics, lack of confidence or even a lack of understanding and suitable partnerships at the back, but the team look like they can concede at any moment.

There’s no sign of the problem fixing itself either, so it does suggest that someone will need to be signed in January as Celtic look to turn this season around.

Sampdoria defender Omar Colley was heavily linked in the summer before Shane Duffy was brought in, so there’s some good news from Sky Sports over his availability.

They claim that Celtic were put off in the summer due to Samp’s demand of triggering his £10.8m release clause, but that’s not he case anymore.

They find themselves in a situation where he’s out of favour and about to entre the last 18 months of his contract, so it would be preferable to sell him on for a cut-price deal in Janaury.

You could make some comparisons with Duffy in the sense that he’s big and physical so he should dominate in the air, but he has the added bonus of being able to turn without looking like he’s wearing ice-skates made out of lead.

The report claims that he will be assessing his options next month but he’s purely focussed on trying to break back into the team for now, but that’s pretty much what he has to say in this situation.

Everything about him suggests that he will upgrade this defence so it’s at least worth finding out how much he would cost, but it’s likely that someone will need to leave to make space first.
