Celtic’s goalkeeping situation: Cheap option or £8.5m gamble touted as likely targets for the summer

In theory Celtic have three goalkeepers who are pushing for the first team spot just now, but none of them have demonstrated they can play at the required level just now.

Conor Hazard is still learning so a loan spell would do him good, Scott Bain will make great saves but he can’t command his box or instil confidence in the defence, and we’re still waiting for the AEK version of Barkas to turn up.

It means that a new signing is very likely in the summer, and the latest rumours today demonstrate two very different options.

In the cheap corner we have Dundee United stopper Benji Siegrist – a player that Lee Wilkie has suggested Celtic should be “all over” due to his quality.

He has been impressive this season and he certainly has the frame to be the dominant keeper that Celtic need just now, but it would be a huge step up and it may not satisfy the fans.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Alaves keeper Fernando Pacheco who is considered as one of the best keepers in La Liga, but obviously he’s not going to come cheap.

A report from The Boot Room has indicated that Celtic, Leeds and Southampton are all showing an interest in him, but the suggested price tag of £8.5m would be a huge gamble for Celtic as that would take up a giant chunk of the transfer budget.

The fact that Southampton are on the lookout for a new keeper also means that inevitable Fraser Forster rumours can start up again after he’s failed to regain his place in their team, so he has to be considered as an option too.

The idea scenario likely sees Forster come back on favourable terms or Barkas finally steps up and shows how good he can be, but it looks like there will be multiple links going into the summer.
