“Luis Palma with an absolutely huge goal for Honduras against Curaçao last night. A thunderous added-time winner from the Celtic winger sealed his country’s place in the knockout stage of the Gold Cup,” Premier Sports

Sometimes in football and indeed in life you just need a break. A moment when your luck turns and things start to look a whole lot better.
Things seemed to be going from bad to worse for Celtic winger Luis Palma. After a loss of form at the Scottish Champions Brendan Rodgers sent him out on loan to Olympiacos and with an option to buy clause included in the deal in the January transfer window.
Having played in Greece before moving to Celtic that seemed like a sensible move for both clubs and most importantly the player but despite Olympiacos winning the league and qualifying for the Champions League, Luis didn’t do enough to merit the Greek Champions spending the money.

On international duty with Honduras a 6-0 hammering against Canada in the Gold Cup last week saw Palma pulled off at the interval and he later described this as a real low point in his career. His national team manager explained his reasoning later saying that he had explained his reasons for not playing Palma – the hitherto Honduran talisman – all the time.
After the Canada debacle Honduras needed victories over El Savidor and Curaçao. They won the first match at the weekend, with Palma on the bench.
The second game last night was more challenging and seemed to be heading for a 1-1 draw and Honduras exiting the competition until Luis Palma’s ‘luck’ turned and his talisman status returned with one wonderful and oh so important goal. Not just for Honduras but for himself.

Absolutely delighted for him. Luis will return to Lennoxtown in due course – the players on international duty get extra time off – and he’ll have a spring in his step and a big smile on his face.
That could very well be something that will benefit Celtic, or perhaps alert clubs who have been reluctant to take up any sales pitches from the player’s agent. Luis Palma is a player. And he’s just reminded us all of that.
Honduras now play Panama in the quarter finals on Sunday and it’s almost certain that Luis Palma will be starting having re-discovered his mojo.
Well done Luis!

Have always liked Palma as a player. His delivery and his finishing can be top drawer. He deserves a chance somewhere.
It’s just a pity that as time has gone on his style and BR’s style have become a chasm apart from what each other need.
