Champions Again, Lustig Calls for Scottish Decision on Title

Mikael Lustig has called for the Scottish footballing authorities to make a decision on the season now and award Celtic the league title and follow the Belgian authorities in awarding runaway leader Club Brugges the title.

Lustig spent seven and a half years in Glasgow, was an integral part of the side that won 8IAR before leaving last summer. Now, the Swede is adamant that Neil Lennon’s side should be awarded the title, as reported by the Daily Record.

“It is not any surprise that I think Celtic deserve to win the league and be named champions.

“I know Celtic would prefer to play the rest of the games and to win the trophy after that but that doesn’t look like it is going to be possible.

“As things stand, Celtic is 13 points clear and they deserve to win the league.

“There are going to be other teams who want the season to be null and void but Celtic are well ahead and deserve to win.

“Hopefully, that will be the final decision and Celtic will be named as Scottish champions again.”

Lustig reckons that the decision to do so wouldn’t be popular with the other half of the city but it would give teams closure and stability amidst the uncertainty of coronavirus. Ideally, as Lustig says, playing the games would take priority but in this period of lockdown, football could be up to six months away.

“It is good in Belgium we have a bit of closure.

“Everybody wanted it to be fair for everyone, but at the moment if they declare Celtic champions then the other side of Glasgow are going to say they didn’t deserve it and vice versa.

“It is going to be strange for everyone but unless they somehow find a way to play the games and finish the season, but if they can’t then Celtic have to be named as champions.”

As discussed earlier today, by declaring the league standings final, the Scottish footballing authorities would be able to release cash to clubs that are worried about their future as the cancellations leave the clubs in a potentially perilous position.

Fans and clubs alike would prefer the full 38 game season be completed but in these unprecedented times, there needs to be tough decisions but fair decisions. The fairest outcome at this stage would appear to be that of declaring Celtic Champions.
