Charly Musonda goes AWOL days after signing for Zulte Waregem

He’s at it again – One-time Celtic star Charly Musonda goes AWOL days after signing for Zulte Waregem. Paul Gillespie reports…

Charly Musonda was a name that promised so much in the game yet has delivered so little. Blessed with an abundance of talent, his skill, class and technique on the ball was delightful to watch in action at times. But unfortunately, Charly has issues and it has plagued him wherever he has went in the game. Now he is at it again – having gone AWOL days after signing for a new club in Belgium.

The club in question is Zulte Waregem, who cannot locate the much maligned Mussonda for love nor money. The player had a short and sweet stint at Celtic Park under Brendan Rodgers, when he signed in the January of 2018. Rarely seen however, his time at the Hoops was underwhelming; although he showed in flashes the brilliance he had at his disposal and the player he could be with the correct attitude.
His interplay with Callum McGregor and co. to set-up the winning goal against Zenit St. Petersburg in the Europa League knockouts of that same year remain one of the best passages of play I’ve seen at Parkhead. It was just a crying shame he has not had the application to match his tremendous talent throughout his early footballing career. One day I’m sure Charly will come to regret that.
Now it has been reported by Daily Record that his antics have followed him to his newest employers in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. The 25-year-old was offered a deal by the club after his impressive trial and bounce match. But the director of Zulte has admitted he cannot find the erratic Mussonda after he insisted he missed training because of a family matter.

Eddy Cordier, the director of Waregem has now revealed he has no idea when the player will return and if he intends to stay in Belgium with his club. In statement, he said:
“When will Charly Musonda return to training? I don’t know. Will he ever come back? No idea. I don’t know whether we will pull the plug on him because he hasn’t been in since he trained a couple of weeks ago and there has been no contact. It’s more important that we concentrate on the group of players who are here at the club for pre-season.
Someone still thinks he’s a big-time Charly clearly…

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
