Christopher Jullien update is positive news for Ange Postecoglou

Christopher Jullien has told Ange Postecoglou that he has no intention of leaving Celtic and instead wants to fight for his place in the team as we enter the new season. The Frenchman struggled for minutes last year as he returned from a horrible knee injury and had been linked with a summer departure as he enters his final year.

According to The Daily Record, Postecoglou met with the player and his representatives in Paris and told the manager that he wanted to stay and fight for his place with the Scottish Champions.

The former Toulouse defender returned to action in February for a brief cameo in the win over Raith Rovers in The Scottish Cup. However, he found his time on the pitch limited by the successful pairing of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt, who formed the solid foundation for Postecoglou’s team.

The manager will want to compete on all fronts but to do that he needs options in each position to keep players performing at a high level and providing cover. Celtic have been liked with Ko Itakura from Manchester City but given the other clubs that are interested in the player, it is unlikely that Celtic will commission a bid worth £6m for a player when Starfelt/CCV are the preferred defensive pairing.

The fact that the player is wanting to stay and fight for his place in the team is a positive for Celtic. The £7m defender is already on Celtic’s books and as a result, we do not need to go back into the market. We know what we are getting with Jullien and he can provide the depth to the backline. The player is posting his preparation videos on Instagram as he ramps up the preparations ahead of the new season.

David Potter’s new book, Willie Fernie – Putting on the Style is featured in the new edition of the Celtic View which is out now and available from the Celtic Stores.  You can also pick up the Willie Fernie book there too or order direct from Celtic Star Books, link below…

I fail to see the positives in a player running down his contract. You know how it works in the last year of a contract; either he signs a new one (if the club wants to make him an offer) or he’s advised to find a new club and Celtic gets a transfer fee. As a £7m acquisition, he will be one of the highest paid players at the club and should command a reasonable fee. If he stays and remains on the periphery, he just remains the expensive liability he has been for the last 18 months. Celtic have had little return on their outlay, albeit, partly due to his injury. Even if he plays, he still leaves next summer for free, which is bad business.

  2. Its not always about money. At his best he will make our central defensive duo look over their shoulder at who,s trying to take their place. If he goes next summer so be it. It wont be the first and certainly not the last that maybe cost us , but what price if it raises the performances of the rest of the team.
