City Council had a year to sort an alternative to Trongate Title Party

Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland had a year to sort something out for a title winning party after trophy day, which takes place this Saturday…

It’s once again a green and white celebration but had things gone badly wrong for the Hoops then the title would have gone to theRangers – so the celebration would still have been on Glasgow. Both clubs should be involved in talks to sort out bespoke events for each club in the event of a title win and whether it’s Celtic or theRangers who are Champions then green or blue plan kicks into action.

If a club from elsewhere in Scotland happens to win the title then their own local council can make their own arrangements.

Is it too much to ask for the Council  in Glasgow – who are now facing an annual bill relating to the aftermath of these celebrations – to organise something properly and in doing so maybe even save themselves some money?

Glasgow Green could easily host this Celtic title winning party. The council could have provided facilities such as food stalls, bars and toilets and maybe charged an admission fee of say a fiver a head. Festival organisers could easily been subcontracted to deal with the logistics and the problem would have gone off Glasgow’s streets.

Celtic understandably don’t want to get too involved, Celtic have 60,000 supporters inside the ground on Saturday which is the warm-up for those heading to the Trongate Title Party afterwards. Many there won’t have been at the game and it’s essentially a tribal football related street festival – without the facilities.

Spare us the stories in the papers about the noise and the mess – provide toilets, bins and other facilities such as medical tents for instance. Don’t just snipe to local hacks who know that they’ll get easy headlines and clicks.

To be fair to Police Scotland they were pushing for something along the lines of what’s suggested above. But the council essentially see it as Celtic’s problem – rather bizarre when it’s happening in the Trongate area and not at or around Celtic Park.

Glasgow Council has also sanctioned Orange Walks for the same day in the city, while not getting into the very valid debates on these summer events, surely it makes sense to make sure none are happening on the day the Scottish Premiership season ends? Regardless of who wins the league.

Again Police Scotland will be left trying to figure out how to keep both events entirely separated from each other and for both to pass peacefully.

Glasgow City Council needs to take ownership of this situation. The young supporters of Celtic will be gathering and if theRangers win the title then their supporters will do the same, presumably in a different part of town.

When Police Scotland advise you of the best course of action surely the Council should take this on board. As things stand the supporters will be there in huge numbers as they celebrate a title win. There’s no bad intent but inevitably there will be issued for the various services – police, ambulance etc to deal with.

The council will do what they always do and we’ll be reading about this time next weekend. But they should reflect on their own responsibilities rather than criticising young football fans for wanting to gather to celebrate their team’s achievements.

This will most likely result in serious disorder on the streets of Glasgow on Saturday.
It has been clear from early this year where the title was headed and what would occur at the Trongate and Merchant City after the final game of the season. To grant permission for a march or that nature in Glasgow on that day is an act of mischief, vindictiveness, or gross incompetence.
It has placed the Police in an impossible situation.

    • Then they’ve put themselves in that impossible position. March was organised last year. Police are consulted and are pretty much the only consultee that can give the sort of evidence that gets them moved.

Fixtures confirmed a few weeks ago. It is, I think, stupid scheduling by the League for a whole host of reasons. But Police, again, have a seat at that table.

I’m a STH but I also live in the area that gets drawn into the trophy day celebration and I can’t help but think the police are at it.

Every year, they practically herd folk into Merchant City like that’s where they want you to be (last year, we were trying to get around it to go out elsewhere in the city centre and, several times, cops tried to direct us to Trongate) and then they just watch for about five hours while it all goes south.
