Clarissa Larssony, Jacynta and the buzz around Fran Alonso’s Celtic Women’s team

You get the impression there really is a buzz about the Celtic FC Women team amongst the Celtic support at the moment.

At The Celtic Star we’ve been proudly covering Fran Alonso’s team for several seasons now but often the coverage can be patchy across some other media outlets. And having the team play at Celtic Park on Saturday and put on a performance in front of thousands watching from the North Stand and Main Stand – as well as by the vocal group of Green Brigade representatives in the North Curve – seems to have garnered a great deal of attention, as well as column inches, and hopefully it’s something than can now be sustained.

While that is certainly true it’s surprising that the red top tabloids haven’t yet got on board a strange policy decision when you think about it. Here are the highlights from Saturday and check out that opening goal from Clarissa Larssony.

Anyway one player who performed superbly on Saturday afternoon at Celtic Park – amongst many it must be said – was Australian international Jacynta, who like many of her teammates seemed to be inspired by playing at Paradise and put on a superb show for the Celtic fans.

And speaking to Celtic TV Jacynta has been looking back on an incredible afternoon of football.

“We were all looking forward to this game, and to have the fans here and have a result like that, it’s absolutely amazing.

“The whole team came out on Saturday and we just gave it our all. I’m glad I got Player of the Match, but I think a lot of the girls deserved it as well. We all just played amazing.”

“Our captain, Kelly Clark, and Natalie Ross had a chat with us before the game. We all came out here wanting to win and we did.”

With league football in something of a period of limbo for Celtic, given they have little to no chance of climbing the SWPL1 table, or indeed of being caught for third place by the teams below them , thoughts for Celtic now turn to a Scottish Cup Quarter Final tie with Aberdeen this Sunday – and with it a chance to progress in a competition, that should the Hoops win it will result in Celtic lifting a domestic cup double, after winning the League Cup in December with a wonderful win over Glasgow City.

And Jacynta feels the experience of last weekend’s win at Celtic Park is ideal preparation for Sunday’s massive cup tie.

“This was the game that we needed. We needed a big win, and a 4-0 win will give us the energy to go into the next game.”

Celtic’s appearance and 4-0 win at Celtic Park on Saturday has certainly ramped up the interest in Fran Alonso’s entertaining side, and what way to ensure the headlines continue to roll for Celtic than a win against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup this weekend. After all a domestic Cup double would make for Celtic’s most successful season thus far.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
