Countdown to Hampden: Celtic 3 Aberdeen 0, 2016

Celtic face Hibernian at Hampden on Sunday in the Premier Sports Cup as Ange Postecoglou’s side looks to win the first piece of silverware of the new season. The likeable Australian has transformed Celtic in his short time at the club and will be looking to lift his first trophy as Celtic manager on Sunday evening.

In the last five years, Celtic have won four of the five League Cup trophies up for grabs with St Johnstone breaking their monopoly of the Scottish game last season. The first of that run came with a 3-0 win over Aberdeen in 2016.

In Brendan Rodgers’ first season, Celtic travelled to Hampden having beaten Motherwell, Alloa and Rangers. Derek McInnes’ well-drilled side stood between them and the first trophy of what would be a memorable year.

Tom Rogic scored an excellent goal after Jozo Simunovic took the ball out of defence. The Australian checked back on two Dons defenders before bending an effort into the corner, beating Joe Lewis in the Aberdeen nets. Forrest doubled Celtic’s lead in the first half as the winger drove into the Aberdeen penalty area before firing a low drive into the back of the net.

Celtic made it 3-0 in the second half through Moussa Dembele as the Frenchman stepped up and sent his penalty into the back of the net. The two earlier goalscorers combined to earn the penalty with a clever pass from Rogic to Forrest lead to O’Connor sending the Celtic man flying leaving the referee with no chance.

The win would be Celtic’s 100th trophy and would be the first of an incredible run of twelve trophies.
