Bad news from UEFA this afternoon ahead of tonight’s Champions League match against Aston Villa as the group stages come to a close…

Daizen Maeda will miss the match this evening after he was sent off in the closing stages against BSC Young Boys at Celtic Park last Wednesday night. The VAR footage shown to the referee appeared to just show the end of the incident and therefore lacked context, certainly considering the Young Boys player Mohamed Ali Camara was already on a yellow card.
Daizen was more sinned against than the sinner
It appeared that Daizen was more sinned against than the sinner but Celtic did not appeal the red card, fearing an increase in punishment should that appeal have failed.
Annoyingly that seems to have happened anyway with UEFA today confirming that Daizen will receive a two match ban for the red card picked up last week.

That of course means he misses tonight’s game and is also out of the first leg of Celtic’s next Champions League knock-out tie after UEFA confirmed a two-match ban for the winger.
UEFA have now confirmed that their Control, Ethics and Disciplinary body reviewed the case earlier this week and imposed a two-match suspension on the Celtic winger, listing the charge as “assaulting another player”. The governing body therefore confirmed that Daizen has received a two ban in UEFA club competition matches.
After his sending-off Daizen posted this apology on social media to the Celtic support…
“Thank you for your support. I’m really sorry for causing trouble to the team in such a wonderful atmosphere. I’ll continue to do my best for the team. Congratulations to all the Celtic fans and supporters,” Daizen Maeda.
