Damien Duff says Celtic factor can help Scotland upset England at Euros

Former Celtic coach Damien Duff has said that the Celtic contingent of the Scottish National Team can help spring an enormous upset and beat England, denting their hopes of a victory at the Euros this summer. Steve Clarke’s side face Gareth Southgate’s England at Wembley with the Three Lions overwhelming favourites for the clash and one of the favourites for the tournament.

Speaking on RTE, as reported by The Irish Mirror, Duff was asked about England’s prospects in the so-called Group of the Death. The former Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers winger said that the Celtic players in the Scotland team are well coached and can help bring about a shock.

“They play Croatia first and Croatia could do them.

“Then they play Scotland, who are close to my heart. Scotland could put England out in the second game. That would be great.

“They have a good, solid squad and an awful lot of Celtic players that are really well coached and top players.

“Scotland are not going to take the game to teams. They’re going to sit back and frustrate and they will do that to England.

“I’m probably a dreamer but, second game, they could be out and the flip side of it is Scotland could go through.”

Duff was appointed to the first team role a few months after arriving when Brendan Rodgers and his backroom staff jumped ship for Leicester City. This left Duff as first team coach to Neil Lennon and John Kennedy, who were retained after the Treble Treble season. This season past, Duff helped the club win 9IAR and the League Cup before deciding to return home to Ireland for family reasons.

He then joined the FAI as Stephen Kenny’s Assistant Manager but resigned from this role at the start of the year after controversy due to showing the team an inspirational short film about Ireland’s past with England ahead of a friendly at Wembley.
