David Moyes to Celtic: Pundit explains what his decision will come down to

There’s no doubt that David Moyes has done an outstanding job with West Ham this year, but it still feels like something isn’t quite right at the club.

That could date back a few years where the owners moved them to the Olympic Stadium but didn’t really back the team on the field, so the huge promises about taking them to the next level didn’t happen.

There’s still a chance that could change this year if they can finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League next year, but the rumours about Moyes moving to Celtic won’t go away and it just wouldn’t make sense if West Ham were completely stable behind the scenes.

Football Insider spoke to Kevin Phillips about the current situation, and he does concede that he doesn’t see Moyes at Celtic next season, but it could all come down to the budget that he’s given:

Ultimately the job he’s done has been fantastic. So Celtic being interested in him won’t play a huge part in his contract negotiations, the owners of West Ham aren’t daft.

They know what he’s worth and I’d be very surprised if Moyes was to leave West Ham in the summer.

“It looks like he’s enjoying his time there, obviously it’s his second spell so he does like the place and he’s got them flying.

The big thing for Moyes will be whether he gets a kitty in the summer – that’s the only reason I can see him leaving – so he can add to that squad and challenge for the top six next year.

“I don’t see him moving to Celtic but obviously he’s in a fantastic position contract wise and he knows exactly what he wants.”

There is a danger that he’s overperformed so much this year that the board will feel they can give him less money and expect the same results, but that would surely result in them plummeting back down the table.

You still get the feeling that Champions League football for West Ham completely rules Moyes out of the Celtic job, but if they start to slide and those contract talks don’t go well, then it could become a genuine possibility.

  1. I’m sort of hoping Fergal Harkin or whoever it is that comes in as the DOF, has one eye on who the new coach will be. And maybe even have sounded out what their response might be to an interview or job offer. Guess we’ll know within a few weeks
