Deeney wide of the mark on Arne Engels reaction to Ibrox assault

It was disappointing to hear a professional footballer criticising a fellow player after he was the victim of a thuggish assault that could have left him seriously injured…

That current professional footballer is Arne Engels who was hit with coins from the stands during yesterday’s Glasgow derby at Ibrox in a match that only had home supporters in attendance. The money thrown at Engels was actually double what Craig Whyte paid for the old Rangers FC back in 2011.

Troy Deeney who currently plays for Forest Green Rovers, and does the odd bit of punditry, was a decent striker in his prime most notably with Watford, but his take on the incident was quite staggering and appalling truth be told.

Poisonous, hateful atmosphere

Deeney reckons that Arne went down ‘too easily’ and if it was him he would have brushed it off. Really? Can he guarantee that if he was playing in such a poisonous, hateful atmosphere with every single supporter in the ground baying for his blood, he would just simply shrug off being belted with coin thrown from distance?

The force the coin was thrown at and the impact it had when it struck Arne would spook the toughest of footballers even a self proclaimed big tough guy like Deeney.

Even if it slightly grazed him or missed him altogether is beside the point. Deeney has totally missed the point here and has side-stepped the main issue.

The people in the wrong were the ‘supporters’ who threw the objects at the footballer going about his professional business, not Arne Engels. Those ‘supporters’ are the ones who should be criticised and retrospectively punished.

Criticising Engels is crazy

Arne should have the sympathy of everyone in the game an beyond too, especially a fellow professional. Deeney like those so called ‘supporters’ at Ibrox has disgraced himself with his stupid comments.
