Scotland skipper and well known Celtic supporter Andy Robertson, has once again been linked with a summer move to Celtic, but despite his status as a top level player, any proposed move for the Premier League and Champions League winner has been met with mixed reviews…
The all action left back is a undoubtedly a top quality player, that’s not in question, he’s been a mainstay in a successful Liverpool side and is the captain of the national side, that alone speaks volumes of his ability and his status in the game.

But at 32, Robertson is entering the latter stages of his career, and his performances for both club and country have been showing the inevitable signs of decline, with his form taking something of a dip in the last 12 months or so.
Would he still be a superb addition? Yes of course he would, and he wouldn’t cost a fee due to his contract expiring in the summer. However he would still command a high salary, not to mention we also have the high earning Kieran Tierney on the books, a player who occupies the same position as his international teammate. That’s something that’s been a severe headache for several national team managers so why give the same problem to an incoming Celtic manager who presumably will want to stamp his own personality of the Celtic squad next season.
We missed the boat on Andy Robertson at youth level, and once again when he was within our reach at Dundee United, but a third attempt at signing him would be a mistake in my opinion.
Kieran Tierney is reaching the peak of his career, and is certainly of a similar standard, if not better than Andy Robertson. Marcelo Saracchi is also a player that we are looking to acquire on a permanent basis, so why would we need another option for an area that we have well covered?
We have other areas of the side that are in need of major improvement, the new manager will face the huge task of be strengthening several positions in the squad, but left back isn’t one of them.
Andy Robertson of Celtic just isn’t fated to happen. It’s a real pity but despite missing out on his dream move to his boyhood club, Andy can reflect on the brilliant career that he’s had in the game and if you can’t sign for Celtic then Liverpool is maybe the next best thing!
