Dom McKay: “We had a disappointing season, but our challenge is to bring success back”

Dom McKay reckons he’s got something crucial in common with Ange Postecoglou as the pair set about the task of reshaping Celtic for the next decade. The incoming CEO believes that the pair are outsiders coming into Celtic from different environment and that fresh insight and impetus will be very much to the club’s advantage in the days, weeks, months and years ahead.

“I guess the journey we’re on, both Ange and I, is to pick everyone’s heads back up again,” McKay said yesterday. The new CEO was boosted ahead of the three press conferences yesterday – for broadcast, then fan media and finally the mainstream media – by both his conversation earlier in the day with the Scottish Government concerning imminent return to football for Celtic Supporters at Paradise and also by the astonishing season ticket sales figures he was getting through which he described as “off the scale”.

It certainly looks like the pair have been given an early vote of confidence for their new regime at the club and that was before the pair impressed the support with what they had to say at Celtic Park yesterday afternoon.

“In terms of the business and the organisation, but also the whole club. The critical thing in picking people’s heads up again is winning games. And winning the right way,” McKay added. “The target is winning and having success. We crave that success, but we want to do that with the style, panache and flair Ange brings.

“Having spent a number of weeks getting to know Ange I’m hugely impressed by his style, plans, philosophy and can’t wait to see him taking the team in the games ahead.

“It’s a real coup. I believe we’ve hired a world class manager with great experience. Great experience in Australia. Great experience in Japan and I want to tap into that to make sure we keep evolving.

“There’s a lot to do and in some respects Ange and I are outsiders so it gives us a chance to look around with fresh eyes. Ange is the manager and will lead the football side. I will look across the whole organisation and make sure we’ve got the right structure for the next decade.

“We’re from different environments, you bring different experiences. Whether it’s been in rugby, or in a different country, that freshness, that different perspective, that new approach means we can get to challenge things.

“Hopefully Ange will add value where it is required. I’m sure that’s the same for me here as well across the business operations. I’m really excited about that.

“The most important thing for us to do is to make sure that as an organisation, as a club, we’re aligned with a really clear vision.

“That’s my job as chief executive to be clear about our visions. Sustained success domestically and to do great things in Europe and we’re going to put the building blocks in place to make sure we’re the modern club we want to be.

“What is important to me is that we win and have success and sustained success. The club is in fantastic fundamental shape. We had a disappointing season, but our challenge is to bring success back.”
