Duffy is trending in the UK – “It’s finally over for Davie Weir. Step up Shane Duffy”

Duffy is trending on twitter after Celtic’s disgraceful 4-1 home defeat to Sparta Prague in the Europa League this evening. Neil Lennon is going to be under intense pressure now to keep his job and few will have the stomach for the fight this evening to come to his defence.

Without Christopher Jullien and Kris Ajer Celtic were a shambles in defence and in Scott Bain we have a keeper who just isn’t good enough to be in goals for Celtic. Having spend almost £5m bringing in Barkas from AEK Athens in the summer the former Dundee man found his way back into the starting line-up, remember after losing his pace against Cluj in last year’s Champions League fiasco.

Celtic’s home form is shocking, truly dreadful. Three home defeats on the bounce, not seen since the darkest days of the 1990s and we all know that football is a results business so tonight Neil Lennon’s time may well be nearing the end.

Certainly his critics will be in full voice over the next few days and those who usually come to his defence, including it has to be said The Celtic Star, will have little positive to say. John Kennedy, Gavin Strachan I am sorry but they are nowhere near the standard of coaches that Celtic require.

A few weeks ago we mentioned Willie Gardner as a better comparison to what was happening to Shane Duffy. Others were using Efe Ambrose as a benchmark for Duffy but Efe was prone to the odd error but he also performed at the highest level successfully for Celtic. He played the night we beat Barcelona at their peak.

Tonight we probably owe Wille Gardner an apology. Duffy is well short of being anywhere near good enough to play in a Celtic side and should now be dropped, if not by Lennon then by the new guy coming in.

Here’s some of the comments on Duffy on Twitter…

“Duffy can’t play again. Atrocious.”

“Shane Duffy is a vendy machine wae a pair a fitbaw boots.”

“This could be a likely scenario in a month. Bare in mind most fans thought we had a “tremendous” window. Barkas 5m – benched. Duffy 2m loan- benched. Ajeti 5m – benched. Turnbull 3m – benched. It’s not hard to see where we’re going wrong and that’s just scratching the surface.”

“As Shane Duffy is a fan then like the rest of us he shouldn’t be allowed into the stadium.”

“As defensive wastes of money go, I don’t think Celtic have ever wasted more money than we’re spending on Duffy. And we once literally spent £5m on a guy called Scheidt.”

Surely there’s a lump of wood out there that could do a better job than Duffy? What a embarrassment.”

“Duffy is absolutely honking. Doesn’t need time to bed in, doesn’t have to adapt to new formations, it’s nothing to do with playing with several different central defensive partners. He is not a good central defender and he plays in central defence. That’s the issue.”
