Edouard delighted at 9IAR despite his disappointment at not reaching 30 goal target

ODSONNE EDOUARD has shared his delight at winning 9-in-a-row with Celtic despite being robbed of the chance to hit his 30 goal target. The Frenchman was in incredible form last season, scoring 28 goals and notching 12 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions as Celtic steamed towards matching Jock Stein’s 1974 record.

Speaking to a 9IAR special Celtic View, Edouard has revealed that he was disappointed at not being able to reach his 30 goal target this year as Coronavirus struck forcing football to be concluded.

“On a personal level, I was frustrated that we didn’t get to finish the league on the pitch.

“I think every one of the players is the same.

“I don’t normally share my personal targets, but this season it was 30 goals minimum, especially the longer time went on.

“I’m sure if the league had continued as normal I could have scored 30 goals.

“But, the most important thing is the title. Celtic winning the title, to win nine in-a-row, which we did – that’s good for me. I’m happy with this.”

Edouard and Leigh Griffiths formed a potent partnership in attack as Neil Lennon opted to change the formation to a 3-5-2. The two strikers helped Celtic move 13 points clear when the league was called back in March and Edouard believes Celtic deserve to be Champions.

“I’m absolutely delighted to win nine in-a-row.

“It’s been a great season for the team and for me, so I’m very happy. Without question, this team deserves to be champions.

“It’s a good decision and the right decision. We’re living in strange times at the moment, it’s a strange life.

“The most important thing is the security and safety of all of the players, all of the fans, their families, so to call the league in the way it was called was a good decision.

“But, given how we played on the pitch, we absolutely deserve to be champions.”

Edouard is excited at the prospect of celebrating the league title with the supporters and his teammates as Celtic begin next season chasing the unprecedented 10IAR. The Frenchman will be hungry to pick up where he left off, scoring goals for Celtic.

“The most important thing to me, personally, is to get the chance to celebrate the title with the fans and my team-mates.

“Then I want to be back playing football as well, because I miss it so much.

“I can’t wait to celebrate but I also can’t wait to be back playing. It’s been very, very hard to be away from football for so long.”

Hopefully Celtic can secure Edouard on improved terms as the club look to better Stein’s record and continue creating Scottish footballing history. Since going, initially on loan from PSG, Edouard has matured into a really top talent and whilst it is expected that there will be interest in him, Celtic should stand firm.
