English side targeting late move for Celtic defender

English League One side Sheffield Wednesday are looking at a loan deal to sign Celtic’s Stephen Welsh. The Owls are second in League One and are linked with a move for the Scottish defender as they look to bolster their backline as they look to seal automatic promotion.

According to a report from The Scotsman, Darren Moore’s side are looking at bringing Welsh in on a deal until the end of the season.

Toulouse attempted to purchase Welsh in the summer but were rebuffed with Ange seeing the player as part of the first team picture. Welsh is now on the periphery of the first team but will still back himself to be a success going forward with the Scottish Champions.

Welsh, 22, was reportedly close to exiting Celtic this month as the Coatbridge Bhoy looks for first team opportunities in the second half of the season but Moritz Jenz’s departure appears to have changed the landscape. The central defender is clearly highly thought of at Celtic but is behind Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt in the defensive hierarchy with Yuki Kobayashi arriving. However, with Jenz’s loan being cut short, Celtic would appear unlikely to loan out a player that is ample cover across the backline. Iwata can play at the back but it is reminiscent of Nir Bitton under Brendan Rodgers/Neil Lennon if we start looking at players playing out of their natural position. Bosun Lawal might be poised to make the step up given his debut against Morton.
