Eredivisie consider reversing decision to cancel season as legal action looms

The DUTCH FA are considering reversing their decision to cancel the remaining Eredivisie fixtures with no Champions and no relegation. The Daily Mail are reporting that a number of teams have threatened legal action which may force the Dutch footballing officials to reconsider their decision.

Ajax and AZ Alkmaar were separated by just a handful of goals at the top of the table when the Coronavirus pandemic forced all fixtures to be postponed. Meanwhile Cambuur, who are 11 points clear in the second division, have been left furious at the decision to deny their promotion to the top division.

Dutch politician Mork Boumans said that should clubs wish to, it would be possible to reverse the decision.

‘I even think it can be reversed. My conclusion is that if half of the clubs plus one want to reverse the outcome of this week’s chaotic decision-making, then that is possible.’

The league leaders would like the chance to play the league to a conclusion, especially with both thinking they are favourites to win the Eredivisie.

Utrecht have initiated legal action against the league’s decision as well, which denies them of a European place. They are three points behind Willem II but have a superior goal difference and have a game in hand.

The football authorities may be forced into reconsidering their decision and exploring the possibility of a play-off behind closed doors for the title and other means of mitigating the fallout of their decision.

This latest development from Holland  looks like bursting a few orange  bubbles here in Scotland. The irony is bitter for them and sweet for the Provisional Champions!
