Ex-Celt backs club to replace Odsonne Edouard with quality striker

Odsonne Edouard looks set to depart Celtic with a reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City the expected destination for the French striker. Fans are worried that given Edouard is edging towards the Celtic Park exit, the club will not be able to adequately replace Edouard with the suitable quality to recapture the league title from Rangers. Ange Postecoglou has already admitted that the club are looking at targets as the rebuild for next season begins.

Speaking to The Sun, ex-Celt Gerry Creaney believes that the club will be able to find, sign and benefit from a high-quality replacement for Edouard.

“Only one or two players in the world are irreplaceable. Celtic have a fantastic reputation for pulling one out the bag.

“No one had heard much about Odsonne when he first came — and he lit up the Premiership.

“There was Moussa Dembele not long ago. Go way back to Mark Viduka, Pierre van Hooijdonk and Henrik Larsson.

“Historically, that position has been filled by some high-quality players. And I don’t think it devalues anything if you haven’t heard a great deal about them.

“The majority were shrewd signings. That’s down to the scouting system. Hopefully Celtic attract someone of a similar ilk who is going to get goals and be a talisman in the big games.”

Despite a quiet season by his standards, Edouard scored 22 goals and bagged 6 assists over the course of the season. He was starved of quality assistance and often cut a dejected character as the season ended in misery. Although, Creaney is right. Celtic have often found some gems in the game through their scouting system. With 55 league goals in three seasons, Edouard has proven himself to be an excellent operator and his goals will be hard to replace – especially with Elyounoussi’s loan ending and Christie expected to depart.

We need to sign a high-quality striker to replace Edouard but also afford Ajeti the opportunity to stake a claim after a poor first season in Glasgow’s East End. Leigh Griffiths is still waiting on a decision from Postecoglou and the club as to whether his year extension will be exercised.
