Experienced referee that took charge of game last year handed Celtic’s Zagreb clash

UEFA have confirmed the appointment of German referee Felix Zwayer for Celtic’s clash against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday. The Scottish Champions travel to Zagreb for Matchday Six of the UEFA Champions League against the Champions of Croatia.

The experienced referee will lead a full cast of German officials for the clash in the Croatian capital. Zwayer will be assisted by Robert Kempter and Christian Dietz with Florian Badstübner fourth official.

Meanwhile Sascha Stegemann is on VAR with Johann Pieifer assisting.

Zwayer has taken charge of two Celtic games before, including in last year’s UEGA Champions League and then one in the Europa League. Zwayer oversaw Celtic’s 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid in which Rodrigo De Paul was shown red as goals from Kyogo and Luis Palma gained a credible draw against Diego Simeone’s side. You have to go back to 2015 for the other game, in which Ronny Deila’s Celtic were sucker punched by Ajax at Celtic Park and lost 2-1.

The referee is considered one of UEFA’s top referees and took charge of England’s late win over Netherlands at the UEFA Euro 2024 Semi Final. The 43-year-old is a regular in Europe’s top competition while plying his trade in the Bundesliga.
