Extra-time goals from Darren O’Dea and Aiden McGeady won the Cup for Celtic

On this day in 2009, Celtic beat Rangers 2-0 in the final of the CIS Insurance Cup.

A crowd of 51,193 was at Hampden for the event and they saw these players come down the tunnel on a reasonable afternoon –

Celtic…Boruc, Hinkel, O’Dea, Loovens, Caldwell, McManus, Nakamura, Brown, McDonald, Vennegoor, McGeady.

Rangers…McGregor, Whittaker, Weir, Broadfoot, Papac, Davis, McCulloch, Ferguson, Mendes, Miller, Lafferty.

Gordon Strachan was the man in charge for Celtic and he must have been a worried man at the end of 90 minutes, as the Hoops had missed a number of very good chances in normal time.

However, two minutes after the start of extra-time, Darren O’Dea headed home Shunsuke Nakamura’s free-kick to give Celtic the lead; and two minutes from time, after Aiden McGeady had been up-ended by Kirk Broadfoot in the penalty area, the Irish international made no mistake from the penalty spot to seal the match.
