Ferguson Hails Griffiths as ‘Best Striker in Scotland’

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has hailed Leigh Griffiths as the ‘best striker in Scotland’ following his hat-trick in Celtic’s 5-0 win over St Mirren on Saturday.

Ferguson, speaking to PLZ Soccer, reckons that a fit and firing Griffiths is to be feared but his resurgence can only be praised.

“You’ve got to give him great credit for coming back. There was a lot of people doubting him

“We spoke about him at length in here and said he may have had to go out on loan.

“But fair play to him, he has obviously knuckled down, he’s worked hard in training and for me I have always said it – when a fit Leigh Griffiths is firing he is the best striker in Scotland.”

Ferguson also backed him for a Scotland recall and not just as a squad player, to lead the line in the crunch match versus Israel later this month.

“There is no doubt about it. He is the most natural goalscorer and you want him in the Scotland national team as well.

“I think Steve Clarke will put him straight in.”

The 29-year-old struggled with personal issues and injuries in the last year but has returned to the first team and has impressed.

“But the thing you need to give Leigh Griffiths is tremendous credit.

“He’s come back from a long, hard road in terms of off-field problems but he’s knuckled down and he’s getting his reward now by scoring goals.”

Griffiths staked his claim for a start at Ibrox on Sunday in the Glasgow Derby with the goals at the weekend and whilst he hasn’t scored there since 2017, Griffiths will be relishing the opportunity to play in a crucial game in Celtic’s 9IAR quest.
