Fitness first Griffiths now better prepared for Celtic challenges

LEIGH GRIFFITHS has been fully committed to his self imposed intense fitness programme over the past couple of weeks.

Chris Sutton took aim at Griffiths in the last two Celtic games, which were both on BT Sport with the former Celtic star co-commentating. Sutton reckoned that Griffiths, who was poor in Salzburg and quiet at Perth, was carrying a little extra wait and in his view looked slightly unfit.

Brendan Rodgers was in the Celtic striker’s ear at McDiarmid Park constantly throughout the match – which Celtic won 6-0 – before replacing hi with Scotty Sinclair.

Griffiths decided to do something about it. The Celtic number 9 missed the start of the season through injury and reckoned that he has been on the back foot fitness-wise in comparison to his team-mates who have had a full pre-season.

The striker pulled out of the Scotland squad – as the manager Alex McLeish had already told the world that he wouldn’t be playing – and instead stayed at Lennoxtown to work on improving his fitness.

Today in the new edition of the Celtic View, Assistant Manager Chris Davies has given us an insight into what Leigh Griffiths has been up to while most of his teammates have been away representing their countries.

“He’s looking to do extra training and is pushing as hard as he can to get as fit as he possibly can,” Davies revealed.

“That can only be a positive for Celtic and Griff himself so we’ll support him to do that. Hopefully he can have a good strong week and be in good condition leading into the Hibs game.

“We have a good block of games coming up so it’s important we have everyone fit. We have league games and then cup competitions with the Europa League and the League Cup semi-final.

“We’re playing in numerous competitions and they’re all important in their own right. As always the next game is the most important, so we’ll focus on that.”
