Former Celt Ki Sung-yueng joins RCD Mallorca

Former Celtic Star Ki Sung-yueng, who became a free agent after leaving Newcastle Utd by mutual consent on January, will continue his career in La Liga after signing for RCD Mallorca in a short term contract that run until the end of June.

“Ki Sung-yueng (Gwangju, South Korea, 1989) is a new Real Mallorca player until June 30 and reinforces the midfield area,” the official RCD Mallorca website states.

“Ki arrives at the free club after playing in the English Newcastle last season and a half. The new Majorcan signing accumulates extensive experience in the Premier League, where he has played 186 games and has scored 15 goals, distributed in Swansea (162 games and 11 goals), Sunderland (34 games and 4 goals) and Newcastle himself (23 matches).

“In addition to this extensive experience in Premier, Ki also won a league with Celtic Glasgow, where he spent three seasons between 2009 and 2012 (66 games and 9 goals).

“With his selection, Ki has been captain and has participated in three World Cups (2010, 2014 and 2018) and has played 113 games (10 goals). In addition, Ki won the bronze medal in London 2012 and has been three times the best player in his country (2011, 2012 and 2016).”

Translation assistance via Google Translate incidentally, someone should let Sky Sports know about it. Any errors will be advised by the fabulous Alicante Celts in due course.

Neil Lennon, who remains a huge admirer of Ki Sung-yueng, was linked with a move to bring the South Korean back to Paradise in the January window, but the telling factor in that one not happening – as indeed with the situation with that other former Celt in the Premier League, Victor Wanyama, was the wages that these players are on down south.

The one exception to that rule though is likely to be Fraser Forster, who has returned on loan form Southampton, is willing to take a pay cut to stay permanently and is an absolute top priority summer signing for Celtic.

We wish Ki Sung-yueng all the best for his time in Spanish football.
