Former Celtic favourite Paddy Roberts nears Sunderland switch

Former Celtic favourite Patrick Roberts looks set to seal a return to England with Sunderland looking to complete a deal for the 24-year-old, who has made just one appearance with on-loan side Troyes. The Northern Echo report that Roberts will cut his loan deal short in France and make the move to EFL League One. Roberts is often linked with a move back to Celtic but with just two goals since leaving in 2018, it is highly unlikely that Celtic would be keen on reigniting their long-standing interest in the pair.

Roberts scored 18 goals in 79 appearances in Scotland and was very impressive under Brendan Rodgers in the Invincible season. The move to Sunderland would offer him first team football and the chance to regain confidence. The right winger would have the chance to settle, something he hasn’t had the opportunity to do since leaving Celtic.

He had a successful two-and-a-half-year leaving with seven trophies and the adoration of the support. Roberts has business interests in Glasgow and if Celtic make an offer, he would certainly stand be keen on a return. However, it is unlikely to see how Roberts would fit into Ange Postecoglou’s side. Given that Martin Boyle is a supposed target, available at £3m, a move for Roberts would be shrewd – even if it is unlikely.

The move to The Stadium of Light would see him team up with another former Celtic wideman, Aiden McGeady. The ex-Ireland Internationalist reignited his career in England’s North East but has been thus far unable to help drag them back into the Championship.
