Former Celtic forward set for Paradise return as Dundee close in on appointment

Former Celtic forward Mark McGhee is closing in on a sensational return to Scottish football with a move to Dundee. The ex-Aberdeen and Motherwell boss is reportedly nearing a return to management with the Dens Park side close to naming his as boss until the end of the season with 64-year-old expected to be in the dugout for the game at Celtic Park on Sunday.

According to The Sun, McGhee will be named as James McPake’s replacement in the coming days with a deal done to ensure that he would replace the departing McPake, who has won just 3 games in 12. Despite winning the last two games, McPake was under fierce pressure to avoid the drop and the timing of his dismissal suggested someone was being lined up.

McGhee is also a good friend of former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan, who is the Director of Football at Dundee. The decision will likely have been Strachan’s to call upon his friend and former Assistant Manager with Scotland to provide The ‘Dee with a solution to the threat of relegation.

McGhee joined Celtic from Hamburg in 1985, joining the club that he had supported. In 113 appearances, McGhee scored 34 goals and won 1 Scottish top flight as well as 2 Scottish Cups in his time. He was fondly remembered for his song: “He’s fat, he’s round, he’s worth a million pounds…. Mark McGhee, Mark McGheeeee…..”
