Former Celtic manager ‘ideal’ for Aberdeen job, says Peter Martin

PLZ Soccer’s Peter Martin believes that Neil Lennon would be an ‘ideal’ fit for the new Aberdeen boss. The former Celtic manager is enjoying a slight hiatus from the game at present, following a mixed spell over in Cyprus with Omonia Nicosia – which saw him win silverware and achieve European success but ultimately, sacked from the job after a few short months.

It seems to be a recurrent theme with Neil these days whenever he gets a management gig; he starts off really well in most cases but eventually, he is relived of his duties or agrees to mutually terminate the working relationship with the respective club he is employed by.

His ill-fated last spell at Celtic saw him oversee one of the biggest disappointments in Celtic’s history, when we went from a position of strength over our Glasgow rivals, to coming second for the first time in nearly a decade. Supporters of Lennon – and the man himself of course – will all point to the mitigating circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic affecting squad morale and disrupting the everyday workings of the club, on top of the want-away stars and the failings in the transfer market that fateful summer of 2020.

However, those whose vision is not obscured by blinded loyalty or an inflated sense of self-worth, can see clearly that the problems with that Celtic team and wider squad ran deeper than just the circumstances surrounding the football being played with no crowds behind closed doors. The players had stopped working for him – it’s as simple as that.

His management style has often been called into question but his record is definitely one that is full of success, though varied for sure. Martin says that the Dons need someone who is fiery and Neil Lennon would be a man of that cloth certainly. But like at Hibernian, will Dave Cormack and others see that the benefits outweigh the negatives when looking at Neil more closely?

It remains to be seen.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
